Ideal Client Series: Part 1

Knowing who your ideal client is, without a doubt, THE most important thing you need to figure out when starting, running, growing your own business. If you don’t have a good handle on this one topic, it will be very hard for you to truly succeed and attract the right customers for your business.
First, what the heck is an ideal client?
This is the person that is a ‘best fit’ for your business. This is the person your business needs to thrive and survive. Your ideal client needs to be VERY SPECIFIC. It sounds counter-intuitive to really focus in on a very well-defined and narrow vision of your customer. BUT. It will honestly, make your business life much easier, more productive, and more profitable to narrow who you are talking to.
If you try to market to everyone, you will end up speaking to no one. Because the person who needs your business will not recognize that you solve the very problem that exists for them.
My definition of ideal client is: the exact person whose problem or issue can be solved by the solution you offer and the value your business provides.
Not everyone will need your services. Not everyone will benefit from your expertise. You must attract the people who DO need your services or product to you. And all this starts by IDENTIFYING and DEFINING very specifically who this person is.
Get very detailed: Give them a name. An age. Where do they live? What type of job do they have? What type of family? Their hobbies and likes/dislikes? Create a client profile! This is the person you will strive to find out in the world. And everything you do in your business should be geared toward this person.
Now, the question arises. Does every single customer need to be this person? The answer is….nope. You’re not going to turn people away if they come to you. But you’ll find, those that fit most of the ‘criteria’ for your ideal client will become your brand ambassadors! They will be the people who help you build and grow your business by spreading the word that you exist. By tooting your horn for you because of the amazing experience they had with you. There will be some people tho come your way that you work with once and you never see again. But your ideal client will be the person that comes back to you again and again and doesn’t even hesitate to spend the money on what you offer because they have come to know, like and trust you. And they KNOW that what you provide to them is the answer to their problem.
Why does having a defined ideal client make your business run more smoothly??
A well-defined ideal client will allow you to focus your message, save yourself time, and make you more money in the long-run
Focus Your Message
Knowing who your ideal customer is helps you craft a message that will speak directly to “someone”. If you’re attempting to address everyone in the whole world, your message will blend in and not actually attract anyone. It needs to stand out to the person whose problem you can solve. Everything you write, content you create, and graphics you design should “speak” to this fictional, yet perfect customer for your business. And once you do that, the people who need your solution will stop their scroll and pay attention to what you have to say.
Save Yourself Time
Think about your best friends in life. You know what they like to drink, what they like to eat. What their favorite color is. You know how they are going to respond to something you say. And when you pass by something in a store or online that relates to them, you think of that person immediately. By knowing your ideal client well, you will already know what they like, what they need, and what they respond to. So you are able to spend all your time creating content and attending to their specific needs. Instead of wasting time guessing what everyone might like and creating something that ends up not appealing to anyone!
The Money Factor
Just like knowing your ideal client saves you time and energy, building a customer profile will also end up saving you money. “Time is money”, right? First of all, you save money by not wasting it on elements and services that your ideal customer may not truly need. Secondly, you’ll EARN more money because you’ll be attracting the right person over and over again, versus only hitting on your ideal client 1 out of 10 tires. Creating what your ideal client needs and solving the business problems they face, will keep them coming back to you over and over again. You KNOW what they need and can anticipate what they need next. They will TRUST you!
